This maximises the effectiveness of each exercise, as the effort is applied in both the concentric and eccentric phases of each repetition. In doing so, the Smith Machine prevents incorrect movement patterns such as carelessly lowering the barbell or "throwing up" the weight. Instead, each repetition is precisely absorbed by the muscles and injuries are prevented.

The Smith Machine is most commonly used for bench presses in the horizontal or incline position to strengthen the chest and triceps.
